Uttapam is a dosa-like dish from South India made by cooking ingredients in a batter. Unlike a dosa, which is crisp and crepe-like, uttapam is a thick pancake, with toppings cooked right into the batter.
Uttapam is traditionally made with toppings such as tomatoes, onion, chillies, capsicum and coriander ; other common choices are coconut, grated carrots and beets. It is often eaten with sambar or chutney. It is one of the popular dishes of South India.
How to Make Uttapam with Toppings of your choice
- Pour the batter into a container and add salt as required. Allow to sit for some time
- Cut the desired vegetables or prepare toppings of your choice and keep aside
- Heat a pan and grease it.
- Pour the batter on a pan with the help of a ladle.
- Spread the batter with the ladle to form a round shape on the pan.Do not spread the batter too thin
- Take a spoonful of the chopped vegetables / toppings and sprinkle on it.
- Spread the chopped vegetables all over the uttapam batter.
- Spread evenly the oil on all sides of the uttapam.
- Cover it with a lid and cook on a low flame.
- Remove the lid and reverse the uttapam with the help of ladle.
- Cook the other side of the uttapam also.
- Serve it either on a plantain leaf or a plate with coconut chutney or sambhar.
